This Tower of London poppy arrived at our studio with a snapped-off lower petal after being knocked off a shelf. Due to the delicate, hand-pressed nature of these ceramic pieces, restoring one requires precise structural bonding, seamless colour-matching to the signature red glaze, and a protective coat. To restore the piece, the broken petal was re-secured using internal structural bonding. Small chips along the join were carefully filled with a fine epoxy compound and sculpted flush before hand-painting the repair area to match the original rich poppy red. The poppy held immense sentimental value for our client and represents an important piece of modern ceramic history. Designed by Paul Cummins for the monumental 2014 installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red, each of the 888,246 handmade ceramic poppies represented a British or Colonial life lost during the First World War. Given their fragile nature and historic significance, we frequently receive these iconic poppies for specialist repair and preservation.
